Mauri Ora is a fee free, part time, home based and kaitiaki supported programme that creates a foundation for cultural awareness and identity and broadens your knowledge of New Zealand history. Through the 12 month Mauri Ora programme, both Māori and non Māori achieve a greater understanding of the unique and fundamental culture that gives Aotearoa New Zealand its unique place in the world.
You will be supported in your learning by a kaitiaki (support person). Kaitiaki are trained experienced assessors. They are highly motivated individuals who live in your region. They are approachable and non-judgmental and will visit you at a place of your convenience – your home or the local library for example. Your kaitiaki will support you and provide resources to help you from your time of enrolment to successful programme completion.
The Mauri Ora programme consists of 26 New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) unit standards. On successful completion of Mauri Ora you will receive the National Certificate in Māori (Te Waharoa) Level 2.
