WHO IS OPEN WĀNANGA?

Open Wānanga delivers home based fee free programmes throughout New Zealand and is part of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, one of the country’s largest tertiary education providers.

We offer a range of certificate level qualifications to people of all ages and walks of life, providing the same unique learning environment that has been the philosophy of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa for 26 years - to overcome barriers to learning and meet the needs of all people within the communities we serve.  

Open Wānanga is, in its essence, Tuwhera or Open.  Open to people, open to opportunity and open to success.

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa has always believed that in main stream education there are too many barriers for those wanting to access education. It recognises that while for many, gaining qualifications in the main stream may be considered a minor challenge, for minorities wanting similar opportunities the barriers can be insurmountable.  Open Wānanga continues Te Wānanga o Aotearoa’s work to open up access to education.

Guided by Māori principles and values, Open Wānanga takes great pride in nurturing an inclusive learning environment, providing kaitiaki (support people) both at home and in the classroom.

Programmes cover topics including “learning to learn” for those who have not studied for a while, English for speakers of other languages ESOL, Māori culture and history, and life skills with topics from managing your finances and your health to employment or small business opportunities.

Our programmes are offered at levels 1 - 4 and are recognised by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, the Crown entity responsible for the quality assurance of tertiary training providers.
